The .SE country-specific top-level domain was started in 1986 and given to Sweden. During the first years after its launch, the registration procedure was really restrictive, so a very limited number of domain names were obtained. Individuals were allowed to purchase solely one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was a requirement, i.e. only Swedish individuals, businesses and organizations could acquire a .SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized notably and, accordingly, the number of dot SE domains has been rising each year.
